We did a test to see if a virtual meeting would interest people. There is interest! We might meet once a quarter, although there was enough interest to meet monthly. Due to some health set backs for me, unfortunately we won’t meet in October after all. I’m planning to do calls the 4th Sunday, 3:30-4:30PM Eastern Standard Time. We’ll skip holiday times, with our next meeting January 24th.
Next time, I will email out the link to all subscribers, but not allow the link to show publicly. If you’ve been forwarded this, please consider subscribing. No adds, no costs.
The meetings are meant to be informal. I shared things I’m working on and interests I have. Then I asked everyone what their interests were. You can pop in just to say “hi” or ask a question.
Here’s a community question that came up during the meeting: What about families living on the county boundaries? A lot of families moved back and forth across the boundary. What ideas do you have about how we can include these families and history as part of the community?
I demonstrated the community tree during the video call. It’s a community tree in FamilySearch, so that literally everything is free. Create a free FamilySearch account and you can see the tree, sources and records. I would love to fill our tree with pictures, stories and records. Audio clips can also be added, usually up to 3 minutes. Do you have family pictures and stories you’d like added to the tree? I’m trying to add and connect everyone who lived in Mecklenburg. There are currently 3,980 people in the tree. When I add in everyone from the 1910 Census, there will be about 29,000 people in our community tree, just from that census.
Do you have connections to this corner of the county?

This corner in Bracey came up a few times during our discussions. Do you know about any people or places in this area? Here it is in the community tree, linked to a few people who I know lived there. Any other people mentioned (pre-1930, or no longer living) will get tagged to this image in FamilySearch. Does anyone have any pictures from this area that can be added to the website or the community tree?

What do you think or remember?
