I’m passionate about researching Mecklenburg, Virginia history- all of it. The availability of records and the technology to find and access them is always improving. However, as time goes by, the number of people who know stories about the community shrinks, and more of the older buildings and places are lost to time.
Although I have a lot of experience researching colonial Virginia history, and finding information in Virginia record collections, I didn’t grow up in Mecklenburg, and I don’t personally know the stories about the people and places in Mecklenburg like people who are from there do.
Do you know one fragment of information? Like: Do you know the name of the church your grandparents married in, even if you don’t know where it is? Is that place name on the website? Do you live near a place in Mecklenburg that you don’t yet see on the website? If you contact Julie with that piece of info, you can help me preserve some community history!
Chronic health issues periodically slow me down. Instead of spending so much time searching for stories and information, I’d prefer to talk to you. Then I can spend more time sharing the history I know with you and building the community tree.
Mecklenburg history is challenging to research. African American history research can feel impossible. I need a lot of help finding where African American records exist and how to access them. So far, most of the African American history I’ve found about Mecklenburg is from old newspapers. I’ve been visiting the Library of Virginia and have joined African American historical societies to learn more.
I created a virtual event to talk to all of you. The first half hour will be about African American research: things I’ve learned, questions I have, and where I’m stuck. Then, in the same video call, there will be an hour about anything related to Mecklenburg history. I’ll briefly demonstrate how the community tree and website work; how to search both, and how to see records and sources. I want to hear your interests and answer your questions!
