79 schools!

Clarksville School, from Library of Virginia (picture not dated)
The school page is ready to share! 79 schools known to have existed in Mecklenburg are listed. Some schools changed names, consolidated, and many are no longer standing. Old pictures from the Library of Virginia, as well as newspaper clippings and information about the 17 Rosenwald Schools are included on the school page. Mecklenburg County had one of the highest number of Rosenwald Schools in the south. Nine Virginia counties didn’t have any Rosenwald Schools. For a Rosenwald school to be built, the community needed to come up with a percentage of construction costs, which was several hundred up to several thousand dollars. This was during the great depression time period. These numbers seem to suggest that education was a huge priority and that Mecklenburg was an inventive community working hard to accomplish very difficult things.
