Here is an update on how I am listing cemetery and church information on my website. I’m listing all the Mecklenburg county cemeteries that I know of on this new cemetery page. I will notate whether the cemetery is in Munsey Moore’s cemetery books and if so, on which page number. I’ll also give links to any external sites or books that show relevant cemetery information (findagrave, billiongraves, Mecklenburg County Cemeteries, DAR cemetery books, etc…) My goal is to help organize and display information about Mecklenburg cemeteries from all the available sources I can find, along side family stories, pictures and community information, organized by the 29 geographic areas I created for this website.
On the area pages, church cemeteries will be on the linked church pages. Here’s an example of area 2 page that I’ve been working on. You can see churches and cemeteries for this defined geographic area. You can then click on a church to see information about that church including pictures, old deed information, church history, and cemetery information. If the church had a school, that information will be given as well.
I am currently looking for church historians to ask if they have church histories they’d be willing to share on this website and how they would like to be credited. I will share digital newspaper clippings of obituaries and funeral notices I find, or people share with me, on each church or cemetery page. For example, this week I found 2 newspaper articles about funerals at Rehoboth Church (Blackridge) that do not have corresponding tombstones for the individuals.
Most of my blog posts in 2022 have ended up being posts about my research regarding places within the county. I enjoyed learning more about the old post offices and smaller places around the county. I created a county history page today, which includes legal information about when the county was formed, as well as some posts relevant to the whole county’s history.
I’m also working on a post about marriage records before 1900, and I’m hoping to do much more with area pages, church pages and cemetery information throughout 2023. I did a lot more work building up website pages rather than smaller posts this year. I hope you find these new pages and features helpful, as we try to learn more about Mecklenburg’s history together.
